Even though Rev. Sun was converted by his Christian parents at the tender age of twelve, growing up in those politically tumultuous years in China was not easy. In fact, life was so difficult that he had to use a small New Testament Bible borrowing from others. When he read Jesus said, It is written, he realized that there should have been another Bible. When he asked his parents, they told him that there was indeed the first part of the Bible called the Old Testament which he finally acquired many years later. Those experiences from his early years have etched into his mind the value of the Bible.
Since then, Rev. Sun graduated with architectural degree, and later went abroad for a master degree. He was working as an architect for seven years in Australia. After he married, he went to Singapore Bible College with his wife, and got his first master degree in Divinity. Upon his graduation, he went to Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary for his Master of Theology study. From 2000, he started his full-time pastoral ministry in Mountain View Chinese Christian Church in California. Presently he is on the faculty of Overseas Theological Seminary teaching the Old Testament, and pastors in the Central Chinese Christian Church, San Jose, California.
Through the experiences of church ministry, he feels that the theological education should not be limited in the academic study. Students must hone their skills of reaping the fruit of exegesis on the pulpit, thus making clear and simple the rich message of the Bible. By being an example to his students, Rev. Sun has continued to hone his preaching skills in his ministry. On any given Sunday, you may find him preaching expositional series on biblical books, some of which include the whole of Numbers, Malachi, Esther and even the notoriously difficult Romans. His love of Scripture helps him to appreciate every God-given opportunity to preach the Bible.
If there is one word which describes Rev. Sun is the word passion. He is never half-hearted about anything and has always passionately pursued his priority. However, even in the midst of any of his passionate pursuit, he always remembers the people around him. His team spirit has been a source of great joy for all those who work with him both in OTS and the church. Most of all, his greatest pride and joy has to be his family whom he loves with the greatest of passion. He and his wife Evie have four wonderful children which like to call themselves the fantastic four. They are God's blessing and joy amidst his busy church ministry and teaching. His passion most certainly transfer to his classroom teaching, especially regarding preaching. In all his classes, he always encourages his students to pave the way between the pastor's library to the Sunday pulpit. In order to achieve such a goal, he never fails to assign at least one paper dealing with sermon preparation at the end of every semester. His students have gained much from such a creative and methodical process.
His recent research interest is focusing on the Old Testament, including the prophetic books, historical books and wisdom books. Another passion of Rev. Sun is his writing, editing and translation work. His Parallel of Historical Books of Old Testament has published by the reputable Hong Kong publisher Ming Dao. He also has done a translation project for the commentary of Galatians of Dr. Sam Tsang also has been released by Ming Dao. He is continuing his PhD study in Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary.
Since he was born in China, his passion for the country has not diminished. Even though he has left, he still wishes to give back to his motherland. So, every year Rev. Sun has traveled to China to equip the ministers of the House Church. In the past he has delivered many courses of Old Testament and New Testament. As a practical man who is always grounded the present, he never forgets his past, but is always looking to the next challenge in the future.
