Dr. Fong brings passion to his teaching and writing in OTS because he desires to apply theological knowledge to practical applications in the Christian life. He knows that knowledge has to be correlated with personal situation and needs. He finds most satisfaction from his students applying what they learn in their ministry because the Bible is addressing “them,” and not “others.” Through his own academic journey, Dr. Fong finds this personal touch to be true in his life, especially with the encouragement of those who have gone before him for which he is quite thankful.
Dr. Fong has many life-long dreams. In his university education in Canada, he felt God’s calling. As a result, he chose to study philosophy in preparation for theological studies. After graduation from his undergrad studies, he studied his M.Div. in Hong Kong Baptist Theological Seminary. Meanwhile he has taken up the pastoral ministry for the church in which he grew up. In his ministry, he found that the Chinese believer must take seriously the significance of theological education. From his pastoral insight, he turned to pursue a higher education in Westminster Theological Seminary, USA. It took him four years to obtain a Th.M. and Ph.D. degrees there. When Hong Kong became a part of Mainland China in 1997, he went back to Hong Kong to teach in Bethel Bible Seminary and Evangel Seminary where he taught courses in Systematic Theology, Church History, Christian Apologetic, and Christian Ethics. He has since joined OTS from 2006.
While teaching, Dr. Fong often senses the lack of good Christian Chinese theological writings in comparison to Western counterparts. This burden causes his commitment to writing so that more Chinese can know God and apply their theological knowledge to their own situation. Dr. Fong often responds to today’s situation by publishing articles in Christian Weekly. He has been invited as inspirational speaker to medical doctors in hospitals, Christian social workers, senior homes, as well as keynote speaker in various publisher conferences and Christian churches.
He realizes that people would unavoidably experience anxiety in life, especially in terms of mid-life crisis expressed in a feeling of “emptiness.” From his researches through Scripture in dialogue with various world views, he publishes The Courage to Be: Overcoming Anxiety in 2002, in order to provide a part of the solution to such crises.
Another area of interest for Dr. Fong is Christian ethic. Even though Christians should respond differently to the same ethical dilemma, not many do. Their inconsistency with their faith stems from conscious and unconscious ethical reasoning outside of Scriptural guidelines. Hence, Dr. Fong recommends a multidimensional ethical method to shed light on how a Christian should make an ethical decision. In his work, he shows his passion of wanting to help people make suitable ethical decisions. For him truth is not limited to “one narrow road”, but to “correct directions.” This understanding is clearly expressed in Christian Ethics: Trinitarian Perspective Approach, 2003.
Today the population of Christians in Mainland China has been growing which is due to the effort of many people. Just as good tree produces good fruit, Dr. Fong thinks that good tree needs good soil so that good fruit can keep growing. Good soil is developed through publishing sufficient and accurate theological writings. To achieve the end of creating good soil, he would like to write a series of text books for systematic theology in the near future. He has finished the first volume of The Experience of God: Systematic Theology. Its title is The Foundations of Christian Theology, 2005. Since experiencing God has been a life-long pursuit of Dr. Fong, he is working very hard to finish the project.
